Highway Department
The Highway Department, under the direction of the Highway Commissioner, is responsible for all roads and properties in unincorporated areas within the township boundaries including construction and maintenance of such roads. In Thornton Township, the highway department also helps with the
maintenance and repairs of the township’s senior transportation buses.
All highway employees are certified by the Illinois Department of Transportation in areas such as snow and ice control, flagging and sign work, asphalt application and drainage.
In an effort to save taxpayer dollars, the highway department utilizes inmates from the Illinois Department of Corrections and from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office to clean up areas along the township’s roads. This department has also purchased equipment such as tractors, vans, grass cutters and
computers from the federal government for substantial savings to residents.
During the summer, the highway department’s responsibilities include re-digging drainage ditches, replacing culverts, filling potholes, sealing cracks and maintaining areas adjacent to township roads. During the winter, snow removal and road de-icing are critical, as well as vehicle maintenance and
garage building repairs. Beautification efforts are also being implemented to help clean the air and provide a sound barrier to local traffic. For more information, please contact the Highway Commissioner at 708-596-6040, Ext. 3119. |
