Thornton Township goes above and beyond in delivering essential services to eligible seniors aged 60 and above. Recognizing the challenges faced by township residents with fixed incomes and no able-bodied individuals in their homes who strive to maintain their independence and continue living in their own homes, the Henyard Assistance Program (HAP) offers complimentary weekly lawn care services throughout the summer season.
From May through the end of October, the township provides employment opportunities to local youth, engaging 75 to 100 youths aged 16 and older. These teenagers undergo training in safety protocols for lawn mowing and are also instructed in being polite, courteous, and helpful when providing lawn care services. Through these efforts, the township fosters a sense of volunteerism, generates summer employment for local youth, and facilitates meaningful interactions between the younger generation and seniors, all while instilling the value and significance of community service. HAP’s impact extends to over 1,100 seniors served on a weekly basis from Monday to Friday, spanning across the 17 communities within the township.
