Highway Department
Antwon Russell
The Thornton Township Highway Department is responsible for the construction, repair, and maintenance of all roadways and easements within the township’s unincorporated areas. Daily operations are managed by the Highway Commissioner, who ensures that roadways remain safe, accessible, and well-maintained throughout the year.
Highway Department staff are certified by the Illinois Department of Transportation in key areas such as snow and ice control, flagging, signage, asphalt application, and drainage systems. In the summer, the department focuses on redigging drainage ditches, replacing culverts, filling potholes, sealing cracks, and maintaining areas adjacent to township roads. During the winter, their work includes snow removal, de-icing of unincorporated roadways, and ongoing maintenance of vehicles and township facilities.
In addition to road-related duties, the department also supports the upkeep and repair of the township’s senior transportation buses.
