The Special Service Program is committed to providing invaluable assistance to individuals with disabilities, their families, and relevant agencies by offering a range of resources and information. Our aim is to enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities in Thornton Township. The program offers social activities and outings. We collaborate closely with local schools, community groups, and non-profit organizations to provide engaging, high-quality health and education initiatives for residents of all ages within our community. We are pleased to provide a number of other valuable services to residents.

Services Offered
Home handicap ramps
Thornton Township builds handicap ramps on several residential homes in the community. Wheelchair ramps are typically built in order to improve home accessibility for people who can’t use stairs or need a gentler, less stressful way to enter or leave their homes. A successful home accessibility project requires careful planning so that the ramp meets the home occupant’s needs, complies with local building requirements, is safe and sturdy, and is safe for use in all types of weather.
Christmas Care Program
The Christmas Care Program is a cherished initiative that brings joy and support to families in need during the holiday season. Each December, Thornton Township distributes more than 4,500 toys and 1,400 holiday food baskets to residents across the community. Children receive three individually wrapped gifts, and families are provided with a nutritious holiday meal. This program exemplifies the township’s spirit of giving, compassion, and unity—creating meaningful holiday experiences while easing financial burdens for those facing hardship.
Grant Writing
Thornton Township’s grant writing team plays a critical role in securing financial support for community programs. Empowered by the Board of Trustees, these professionals actively pursue county, state, and federal grants to help fund essential services that benefit both residents and taxpayers. Through diligent research and skilled proposal writing, the team has successfully secured over $1 million in new grant funding, which is reinvested into programs that enhance the lives of township residents.
