Thornton Township is committed to supporting the independence and well-being of eligible seniors aged 60 and over by providing essential services that make a meaningful difference in their daily lives. Understanding the challenges faced by residents on fixed incomes, especially those without able-bodied individuals in the home, the Thornton Assistance Program (TAP) offers weekly lawn care services throughout the summer months.
From May through October, TAP also creates valuable employment opportunities for local youth. Each year, between 75 and 100 teens aged 16 and older are trained in lawn care safety and customer service skills, including professionalism, courtesy, and respect. This initiative not only promotes community service and volunteerism but also encourages positive, intergenerational connections between youth and seniors. Through TAP, Thornton Township provides weekly lawn maintenance for over 1,100 seniors across its 17 communities, Monday through Friday.
