The Highway Department, under the direction of the Highway Commissioner, is responsible for all roads and properties in unincorporated areas within the township boundaries including construction and maintenance of such roads. In Thornton Township, the highway department also helps with the maintenance and repairs of the township’s senior transportation buses.

For more information, please contact the Highway Commissioner at 708-596-5955

All highway employees are certified by the Illinois Department of Transportation in areas such as snow and ice control, flagging and sign work, asphalt application and drainage.

During the summer, the highway department’s responsibilities include re-digging drainage ditches, replacing culverts, filling potholes, sealing cracks and maintaining areas adjacent to township roads. During the winter, snow removal and road de-icing are critical, as well as vehicle maintenance and garage building repairs.
