Property Tax Workshop

Thornton Township hosted free property tax assessment and property after death workshop at the township headquarters, 333 E. 162nd in South Holland. More than 220 residents learned about their upcoming homeowner assessment process that will begin in August and how to file tax appeals. In addition, residents learned how you can transfer their home, car, and bank account to loves ones for free without the need for a will, trust, legal fees or thousands of dollars in court costs.

“The Assessor’s Office is central to government because we help our residents understand their property taxes,” said Cassandra Holbert, Thornton Township assessor. “We act as taxpayers’ advocate and our goal is to provide assistance and educate our taxpayers as they go through the assessment process.”

The Thornton Township Assessor’s Office schedule meetings throughout the year to explain the taxing process, how tax bills are calculated, the valuing of property, any updates in the filing of appeals, and provide detailed information regarding tax exemptions.  Representatives from other governmental agencies, such as, the Cook County Assessor’s Office, Recorder of Deeds, and the Board of Review have supported our forums in providing valuable information on services available in assisting our residents in their taxing needs.

“It’s important for our residents to be knowledgeable about their property tax assessments and know how to appeal if necessary,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor. “At Thornton Township, we have a dedicated assessor’s office that every day works with our residents to ensure that the taxpayer’s property is assessed fairly and accurately, and that they receive the best outcome for themselves and their families.”

In addition to the above mentioned, the Assessor’s Office provides a multitude of services relating to property taxes:

  • Informs and assist taxpayers on Cook County Assessor’s and Board of Review appeal filings
  • Update and maintains sale data and building permits
  • Maintains up-to-date address records and maps
  • Delivers request for Certificates of Error, exemption renewal applications and appeals to the Cook County Assessor’s Office
  • Assist in the ordering of tax redemptions from the County Clerk’s Office
  • Works with the Cook County Treasurer’s Office on behalf of taxpayers in obtaining duplicate copies of tax bills and submitting name change requests
  • Assist with property characteristic updates
  • Provides application and information regarding property division and consolidation

Taking place at the township headquarters, 333 E. 162nd in South Holland, resident can learn about their upcoming homeowner assessment process that will begin in August and how to file tax appeals. In addition, residents can learn how you can transfer their home, car, and bank account to loves ones for free without the need for a will, trust, legal fees or thousands of dollars in court costs.

Real Men Can Cook

Thornton Township in conjunction with Fathers and Blessings sponsored the 2nd Annual Real Men Cook Event. The national event took place at the Dolton Park District.

“Thornton Township is honored to be part of the second annual Illinois South Suburban Real Men Cook Father’s Day Celebration. We know the excellent work that Fathers and Blessings is doing for the community,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township Supervisor. “At Thornton Township, our motto has always been People Working With People because we know that together we are stronger. We also understand the impact that every man, fathers and father figures has on the community. Thornton Township is committed to helping everyone in the entire Southland receive the quality of life they deserve.”

The event sponsor Demetrious Walker, CEO/President of Fathers and Blessings NFP in the event’s literature said, “We are excited to bring the 28th Annual Real Men Cook event to the South Suburbs for our 2nd Annual Fathers and Blessings Real Men Cook Father’s Day Event.”

According to the organization’s literature, Fathers and Blessings will be working alongside the original co-founder and longtime cooks of the Nationwide Real Men Cook event continue to assist them with keeping their 28-year legacy alive. It is further stated, “Fathers and Blessings has been given the honor to host this longstanding celebration for the second year in the South Suburban area. Both Fathers and Blessings and Real Men Cook promote the important role that men have in their families and communities. Fathers and Blessings and Real Men Cook celebrate fathers, sons, uncles, brothers, coaches, teachers, and mentors that provide hope and examples for the next generation.”

Ernst Lamothe Jr., Public and Community Relations Manager for Thornton Township said, “This event is a priority for Thornton Township and we recognize the local and national importance of this event. Not only is the event a family affair locally, it is also national. Communities across the South Suburbs are encouraged to participate,” said Lamothe.

The township also gave out free Father’s Day hats to those who attended.

Jerry Jones, a Thornton Township Trustee, a supporter for the event remarked, “I think it is a fantastic event that they put on. Real Men do have a positive effect when we start getting more men together; it increases the moral commitments in our society. ”

An estimated 80 South Suburban communities have been targeted including the Chicagoland area.

Cooks participating in the event and a guest will receive free entry into the event; annual Illinois South Suburbs Real Men Cook Father’s Day Celebration commemorative apron; coaching from veteran cooks; and a chance to participate in Judged Cook-off.

A resident and Senior Trustee for Thornton Township Joyce Washington said, “We fully support the event and hope that it exceeds it expectation and success. Personally, I can’t wait to sample those tasty ribs.”

Fishing Derby

Thornton Township hosted a fishing derby in Lansing for our special services program, which helps people with physical and mental disabilities.

“We could not have done it without the help of the Thornton Township staff. Everyone truly upheld the township motto of People Working With People,” said Beverly Tomczak, special services coordinator.

The Thornton Township Special Service Program was to provide activities and outings for the Developmentally Disabled within the Township and surrounding areas. Over the years it has expanded to the building of wheelchair ramps and home modifications. We are here to assist people with disabilities, their families and agencies with the resources and information that are available to us.

Special Services also provides quality health and education programs for local residents of all age . Some of our activities include:

  • Monthly dances
  • Fishing Derby in the Summer
  • Bowling leagues
  • Field trips
  • Special Prom dance
  • Supporting our Special Olympics clients
